about

Power-pop quartet Post Office formed in 1995, on the heels of co-songwriter Larry O. Dean's move to Chicago after a decade-plus living in San Francisco. Dean's return to his native Midwest was spurred, in part, by his dissatisfaction with the Bay Area's stagnant music scene, which leaned toward humorless post-punk headbanging and Grateful Dead-y jams over melody and tunefulness. Placing an ad in the Chicago Reader, Dean met Stephen Becker, a Seattle transplant by way of Maine, and the two guitarists bonded over a shared affinity for The Posies, XTC, Teenage Fanclub, and Big Star. The band's rhythm section was recruited in the same manner, and before long they were playing Chicago clubs with occasional forays into the outlying area.

During their brief heyday, PO recorded two albums, Public Displays of Affection (Spade Kitty 1996, cited by renowned Chicago critic Jim DeRogatis as the “best local band in this genre since the Reverbs”), and Fables in Slang (Spade Kitty 2001). While the band produced its debut with engineer Ed Tinley at Chicago's Kingsize Sound Labs, the latter was produced by Chris Stamey (The dB's, Whiskeytown) at Modern Recording in Chapel Hill, NC. During the five years between albums, the band's rhythm section changed, with Dean and Becker holding down the songwriting fort.

Since disbanding, Dean formed The Me Decade, releasing Gentrification Is Theft (Spade Kitty 2002), and currently fronts The Injured Parties, whose debut Fun with a Purpose was released in 2009. Becker, who now lives in Los Angeles, formed Le Concorde, releasing Universe & Villa in 2005 and the recent House (2010).

Recorded June 22, 23, 26, 1996 at WNUR, Evanston, IL. Engineered by Matt Walters. Mastered February 2012 by Mike Hagler at Kingsize Sound Labs, Chicago, IL.
